Abstract
This paper examines assumptions which surround women’s experience of menopause. The ways in which myths and stereotypes about women are perpetuated in the health care system and affect women’s health are considered, and ways in which the dominant ideology may be challenged and overcome are suggested. In particular this paper examines the way myths and stereotypes have contributed to women’s experience of menopause as an unpleasant event to be endured rather than as a normal aspect of aging marking the beginning of a new phase of their lives.
