Abstract:
Nursing education in New Zealand today is faced with the same problem as much of tertiary education in general – a large proportion of the incoming students are seriously deficient in basic maths skills. This paper describes the performance of two comparable groups of first-year Comprehensive Nursing students at Hawke’s Bay polytechnic, showing how a few, relatively simple changes resulted in a dramatic improvement in the mastery of basic maths skills.
